CAIRO -- Twenty-six men arrested during a televised raid on a Cairo public bathhouse last month and accused of "debauchery" were in court Monday in what human rights activists describe as the latest example of an increasingly oppressive crackdown on Egypt's gay community. The defense team told CBS News after the proceedings that the court would reconvene on January 12, when it is expected to issue a verdict in the controversial case. Though homosexuality is not technically illegal in Egypt, the socially-conservative country has a history of persecuting homosexuals.

CAIRO -- A Cairo court acquitted 26 men on Monday who had been accused of "debauchery" in a rare victory for Egypt's gay community that has of late faced an increasingly oppressive police crackdown. The defendants had faced between years in prison on varying degrees of "debauchery" -- the most common Egyptian legal term used in cases against men accused of homosexuality. Though homosexuality is not technically illegal in Egypt, the police and courts have a history of persecuting the gay community in this socially-conservative country.

Support Star Observer. REPORTS have emerged that Egyptian police have arrested 33 men for suspected homosexual conduct after they raided what they believed was a gay sauna in central Cairo. The men were also allegedly paraded naked in front of the media and onlookers as they were loaded on to trucks.
